I help older adults rediscover the joy of walking in nature

For 16 years, I've been designing hiking experiences in the Wicklow Mountains that feel achievable, safe, and genuinely rewarding for people aged 60 and beyond.

From fitness instructor to hiking specialist

It started with a gap I noticed, became a passion, and turned into a mission to make mountains accessible.

2008

The spark

Working as a fitness instructor in Dublin, I kept hearing the same thing from older clients: they wanted to walk outdoors, but they weren't sure where to start or whether they were fit enough. Nobody was really catering to that middle ground — between "I'm too old" and "I'm ready for serious hiking."

2010–2012

Education and credentials

I pursued a degree in Sports Science at Dublin City University and then specialized training in gerontology through Trinity College Dublin. I wanted the science behind age-appropriate exercise, not just general fitness knowledge. Understanding how bodies change, what mobility really means, and how to adapt activities — that became my foundation.

2014

Wicklow Wanderers begins

I launched a programme specifically for people aged 60+ who wanted to walk the Wicklow Mountains but needed proper guidance. The first group was just eight people. Within three years, we'd guided over 800 participants on beginner-friendly routes. That success proved something I already knew: there's huge demand for this. People don't lose their love of nature as they age — they just need the right support.

2020–Present

txpind Ltd and beyond

Now I lead content development at txpind Ltd, translating everything I've learned into practical guides and resources. We're building the toolkit that older adults need — honest information about route difficulty, what to expect, how to prepare, and why certain routes work better than others. It's still about that same goal: helping people experience the mountains safely and confidently.

What I Know

Specialized knowledge across outdoor recreation for older adults

My work combines practical mountain experience with formal training in both sports science and gerontology.

Route design and selection

I've mapped over 40 beginner-friendly routes across the Wicklow Mountains. I know which paths have good rest points, where the terrain gets challenging, and which views are worth the effort. I understand how to balance scenic value with realistic difficulty levels.

Age-appropriate fitness and mobility

Through formal training in gerontology, I understand how bodies change with age — and that's not a limitation, it's just information. I know how to assess mobility, design preparation routines, and help people build confidence gradually without pushing too hard.

Irish weather and terrain

I've spent thousands of hours in the Wicklow Mountains across all seasons. I know how weather changes on the mountains, how to read terrain, and how to prepare people for what they'll actually encounter. No surprises on the trail.

Group facilitation and safety

Running groups of older adults requires a different approach than younger hikers. I've developed systems for keeping everyone together, managing different pace levels, and ensuring nobody feels rushed or left behind. Safety is built into everything.

Educational content and guidance

Turning complex information into practical guides is what I do at txpind Ltd. Whether it's packing advice, understanding weather patterns, or building strength before a hike, I know how to explain things clearly without being patronizing or overwhelming.

Community partnerships

I've worked with retirement communities, community centres, and health organizations across Leinster. I understand how to build trust with institutions that serve older adults and create programmes that actually work for their members.

How I Work

My approach to outdoor recreation

Confidence over fitness

Yes, fitness matters. But confidence matters more. I've seen people with modest fitness levels do amazing things on the mountains because they trusted themselves and understood what to expect. That's what I focus on building — the belief that you can do this, supported by realistic preparation.

Honest difficulty ratings

No sugar-coating. When a route is steep, I say it's steep. When it's wet and rocky, you'll know that beforehand. I describe trails the way I'd describe them to a friend — with enough detail that you can make an informed choice about whether it's right for you today.

Pace is not the goal

Walking shouldn't be a race. I design everything around enjoyment and conversation — the chance to actually notice where you are. If it takes four hours to cover a route that could be done in two, that's fine. The mountains aren't going anywhere.

Knowledge without jargon

I understand the science of age-appropriate exercise, but I don't need to fill my writing with technical language. I explain things the way they matter — practically, clearly, and with enough context that you actually understand the why behind recommendations.

"Outdoor activity shouldn't be intimidating for older adults. It should be thoughtfully planned, honestly described, and genuinely enjoyable. That's what I've spent 16 years learning how to do."
